How can I resolve this problem? A backup drive isn't much use if half the items on it are inaccessible. This did not work nor change the message I get when I try to open the image files. I did not have a Saved State file to trash. I tried the suggestion above with trashing the Preview Cache, Container and Preferences files. You can use the built in utility of macOS to see and clear unwanted files, hidden files/folder easily. Files with the dot are usually hidden in the Finder and the Recents folder. There is a simple way to solve this problem. There are many system files on Mac, and to hide them, macOS uses a special technique: it appends ‘.’ (dot) in the front of the filename. Rename the file to hide it from Recents folder. When I trashed and deleted one folder of unopenable images on the backup drive and replaced it with a direct copy from the primary drive, I was given the same message that I lacked the privileges to open the items. As a result, the original file will still appear in the Recents folder. I am able to open the original images on the primary external drive.

mp4 files on this same drive without incident. I am getting the same message about not having sufficient privileges to open these files despite having set the permissions for the entire disk, the specific folder and the individual. All Mac systems contain hidden files and folders.

I am unable to open any image files on an external back up drive.
